Calls have been made for a closed arts centre to be upgraded to enable it to host touring exhibitions from places such as the Victoria and Albert Museum.

King’s Lynn Arts Centre, in St George’s Guildhall, shut in December 2015 and West Norfolk Council’s regeneration and development committee heard
this week that it could cost £3.3m to renovate it, which is about £1m more than originally thought.

A Heritage Lottery Fund bid for about £2m will be submitted by the council next month to redevelop the King Street site.

But Lesley Bambridge, ward councillor for the area, wants it to be upgraded at the same time.

She said: “West Norfolk needs somewhere where touring exhibitions can come to, but at the moment the arts centre galleries are not good enough, because of humidity problems.

“It’s extremely important that something is done to bring the complex back into use.”

The meeting also heard that the maximum seating capacity at the guildhall theatre could be fixed at 300.

A further meeting will be held with arts groups next week.
