Norfolk's social calendar has ground to a halt as World Cup mania has gripped the county.

From community events to council meetings being pushed back, no event is important enough to miss seeing England take on Croatia.

Cinema City in Norwich have said the film industry as a whole have held off releasing films around the time of the World Cup to prevent clashes.

A spokesman said: 'The cinema industry has become a bit more savvy with regards to scheduling big releases around sporting events and so it has been a fairly quiet couple of weeks for us in terms of big titles.'

Despite this, the less mainstream films they do show have not been affected by England fixtures. The spokesman added: 'It's also important to remember that not everyone likes football and so we have been scheduling films regardless of the England matches.'

Clubs and councils in Norfolk have been making sure not to miss the games.

The Rotary Club of Diss and District had planned its handover ceremony on the same day England were set to take on Colombia, but moved the meeting an hour forward and arranged for a giant screen to show the match.

Lowestoft Town FC's first home friendly of the new season has been put back a day due to the World Cup semi-finals.

The Trawlerboys scheduled clash with Waveney has been moved from July 11 to July 12.

Cromer Youth FC are also planning ahead, moving their Sunday tournament an hour earlier to be ready for an early finish.

In Great Yarmouth, the borough council's development control committee was due to be held at the time of the match, but has been put back to next week.

Hospitality businesses have rescheduled their timings as well.

Richard Graveling, manager at The Grove Hotel in Cromer said: 'We have decided we're going to have our dinner service slightly earlier tonight because our guests and kitchen staff will all want to watch the game.

'We'll be serving from 5pm to around 7pm, so not too different from our usual time, and we are being flexible. We're just trying to make sure we get as many people fed as early as possible.'

However customers who may have booked their tickets to events further in advance have tended not to pull out.

The Norwich Theatre Royal said: 'It is business as usual for us at Norwich Theatre Royal and Norwich Playhouse this evening for performances of Some Mothers Do Ave Em and the opening night of the SIX tour respectively.

'We would, of course, also like to wish England good luck for the game.'

The Cromer Pier also confirmed that they hadn't had any cancellations, and shows would be lighting up the Pier stage as usual.
