As part of our regular series of profiles on the region's Young Farmers' Club (YFC) members, self-made business owner JUSTIN DENNIS talks about running his own landscaping and construction enterprise.

I own and run JD Services, which has been trading for five years.

I have two full time members of staff, a part-time secretary and myself, who all work as a closely-knit team in order to accomplish the workload as efficiently as possible. We are heavily involved with the agricultural sector, completing miles of specialist fencing last year with our tractor and post-knocker.

My role involves communicating with customers, organising the delivery of materials and time-tabling the most efficient use of staff time. Alongside all of this I have to make sure all vehicles and machinery are well maintained and fit for purpose at all times.

The long and the short of it is that in order to have a productive company we require happy customers, which is where my skills as a manager are put to the test. I left Stalham High School at 16 and started working on a self-employed basis. I have always worked hard to ensure we have a happy customer. I will learn about something, take it on and get it right. We have taken on some massive jobs. When I was 20, I built a stable block and some of the contracts now are worth £40,000. That's not bad for a boy like me.

All my farming background comes from Sam Gresham-Hill at Barnham Broom. He has been a terrific customer and I would call him a life coach.

My workload is produced mostly from word-of-mouth contacts which have led us into other sectors including construction and restoration, hard landscaping, equestrian build and arenas.

I have been a member of Wymondham YFC for four years. This has given me a great grounding, some fantastic advice and, as a bonus, a strong social life. I know for a fact that my company wouldn't be as successful as it is now without the help and support of Norfolk Young Farmers.

Wymondham as a club has assisted in my personal development through competitions such as public speaking and the big one – Rally Day. Young Farmers has opened so many doors for me, both personally and professionally so I can't recommend it enough.

Wymondham YFC meets on Mondays at Wymondham Community Centre. For more information, contact the county office on 01603 731307.
