A special show of East Anglia's native breed – the red poll – is being staged next Sunday.

Diana Flack, who was recently elected as president of the Red Poll Cattle Society, has received strong support for a show of young stock to mark her third term in office.

The President's Show, which is being staged by invitation of the Lord Iveagh's Elveden estate, near Thetford, will take place on Sunday morning in the Old Walled Gardens.

'When I was nominated as president I thought that I had better do something for the society and so I proposed holding a special show for young stock. The response has been tremendous,' she said.

As the society's field officer for more than 10 years until retiring less than two years ago, she has travelled the country inspecting cattle and helping members. One highlight as field officer was in 2008, when the breed celebrated 200 years since the herd was started at Holkham Hall.

'There have been about 50 cattle entered from herds as far away as Lancashire and Yorkshire. There's also been a very strong entry from herds in the eastern counties.

'It is only for young stock, of under two years' old but it has been quite a task to organise. I've never run a show before in my life, so it is quite an undertaking.'

The society's chairman, Tony Barratt, who runs one of the largest herds in the county on the Sandringham estate, is also supporting the show on Sunday, April 28. Other regional exhibitors include Peter and Tilly Grint, of Salhouse, Norwich; Dennis Jenkin, of Heathgate Livestock, of Shadwell, neat Thetford; Sarah and Gerald Barnes, of Tharston, near Norwich; Richard Brooks, from Hepworth, Diss, and Ian Stennett, of Ubberston, near Halesworth.

Yorkshire breeder Gerald Farmer, of Doncaster, and Simon Temple, from Lancashire, are also travelled to the show.

Now 79 and living at Great Bircham on the Sandringham estate, Mrs Flack been involved with the breed for more than 60 years and actually started keeping red poll cattle with her mother in 1947. She was elected at the society's recent annual meeting, which held at Stoneleigh, earlier this month.

There will be two judges, who will each judge all the classes from 11am.

A leading breeder from the Republic of Ireland, Ernest Mackie and the noted Suffolk horse breeder, Roger Clark, of Stoke by Nayland, will share the task.
