Commuters could face delays on one of Norwich's busiest road tonight due to a burst water main.

An Anglian Water spokesman said: 'We were called to a burst water main at the junction of Richmond Road and Dereham Road in Costessey this afternoon.

'The problem was found to be a crack on one of the joints which link the sections of pipe and this has now been repaired, although the job was made more difficult by the need to avoid damaging a number of other utilities under the road.

'Water supplies were restored by about 4.30pm. We believe some 250 properties would have been off water as a result of the burst and we apologise for the inconvenience.

'Temporary traffic lights are in place and will remain until the road is repaired tomorrow. This is a major route in and out of Norwich and people's journeys are likely to be delayed as a result. Again, Anglian Water is sorry for any problems this may cause.'
