A teenager who was rescued at Beccles Lido last week has died in hospital.

Emergency services were called to the pool in Puddingmoor just before 6.40pm last Thursday to reports that a 15-year-old boy was unconscious in the water.

The boy was rescued by lifeguards who started the resuscitation. Paramedics then treated the boy at the scene before he was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital by air ambulance where his condition was described as serious.

He was then transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital where he died today.

A police spokesman said: 'At this stage there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident and police will be preparing a file for the coroner.'

The incident happened less than two weeks after the pool opened for the summer season.

Earlier today the directors of the pool announced it would be closed tomorrow as a mark of respect.

An official notice was posted on the Beccles Lido website.

It said: 'Beccles Lido is closed to the general public on Thursday, June 11. There was an incident at the Lido on Thursday, June 4, during which a boy was rescued from the pool and CPR (CardioPulmonary Resuscitation) carried out.

'The emergency services attended and the boy was taken by air ambulance to hospital where he is receiving the best possible care.

'As a mark of respect we have decided that the pool should be closed to the general public on Thursday, June 11. We will re-open 7am on Friday, June 12. We are liaising with all relevant agencies and at this stage we would respectfully request that you understand we have no further comment to make. Our thoughts at this time are with the boy's family and friends.'

No one from Beccles Lido was available to comment further.
