An upgrade to the railings on Queen's Square was agreed at an Attleborough Town Council meeting late last year - and the railings were officially unveiled this week.

The project has been years in the making for several councillors.

Mayor Karen Pettitt said 'It is something that both myself and councillor Sam Taylor have been very passionate about and we have been working to get this project done for several years.

'I am very pleased with the finished result.'

Mrs Pettitt praised contractors Groundscape, who completed the work.

She said that standard poles for hanging baskets and the town's Christmas lights would be installed at a later date.

'It is great to see the square restored to its former glory,' she added. 'The square is the jewel in the crown of Attleborough and it is something that draws people to the town centre.'

Mrs Taylor said that although a price of around £25,000 was initially agreed at the town council meeting, the project had come in under budget at around £17,000.

Discussions on improving the town centre initially started around three years ago, she added.

'We knew that some of them were in quite bad disrepair and it was an issue, so we talked about what we could do to improve it,' she said.

'I thought it would look better to, rather than replace the 15 or 20, just to restore it properly.

'People have commented on how nice they look and I am pleased with it.'

It is part of an ongoing council scheme to boost the area, with councillors including Mrs Taylor and Tony Crouch often out planting bulbs in the square and surrounding areas.

In December, members of Attleborough Boxing Club swapped their gloves for gardening as they planted 5,000 bulbs in the square.
