Police have named the woman in her 70s killed in Beccles on Friday as Barbara Smith.

Police were called just before 1.25pm to reports of a collision between a Ford Transit van and a woman pedestrian in Newgate near to the Thurlow Nunn Vauxhall car garage at the junction with Station Road.

Several people began attempts to resuscitate the woman before emergency services arrived, and these attempts were continued by paramedics. However Mrs Smith, 75, who lived on Station Road in the town, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

The man driving the van was uninjured.

Two ambulances and an air ambulance were also called.

The road was blocked at the crossroads with Market Street, Newgate and Station Road. It was reopened just before 5pm, after officers carried out investigations at the scene.

Officers are asking anyone who may have seen what happened to call the Serious Collision Investigation Team by dialling Suffolk Police on 101, quoting CAD number 200 of Friday, November 6.
