The organisers of the carnival, due to be staged on August 18 and 19, are appealing for community-minded women, girls and boys to take a starring role in the event.

Those interested will be invited along to the carnival court selection event at Blyburgate Hall in Beccles on Sunday, May 20.

The job of the carnival queen, princesses and prince is to represent the town for a year and participate in local events and fundraisers, as well as attending other carnivals in the area including the Lord Mayor’s Procession in Norwich.

Annette Tackley, the main organiser, said: “The selection afternoon is definitely not a beauty contest. We are looking for girls, boys, and women who would represent our beautiful town well over the coming 12 months. And who would like to raise money for there very own chosen charity.

“The carnival court is so much more than sitting on a float and waving in the main carnival parade. It is about being the face of Beccles during the carnival weekend, helping your local community, and with the other events within the town. It is also about not being afraid to join in and get your hands dirty every now and again.”

The queen and princess roles have been part of Beccles Carnival for more than 50 years.

Handing over the crowns are last year’s winners Samantha Chapman, who took the Miss Beccles title, Esme Jermany and Lily Gordon as princesses and Josh Brabben as the prince.

The princess and prince roles are open to youngsters aged between eight and 14-years-old, while the new Miss Beccles is open to those aged 17 and over, with no upper aged limit.

Those wishing to enter must either live, work, go to school in Beccles or live within 12 mile radius of the town.

Entry to watch the newly-crowned ambassadors will be £3 for adults and £1 for children.

Application forms for Miss Beccles are available on the Beccles Carnival website. You can also email becclescarnival@outlook.com or call Annette on 01502 715671.
