Award nomination for support worker at a King's Lynn hostel

Lucy Bains, who is a support worker at a hostel for the homeless in King's Lynn, has been nominated for the prestigious 'Women of the Year Award'.

Lucy Bains been helping vulnerable people at the Merchants’ Terrace scheme in London Road since 2011.

The team provide accommodation, including emergency beds, and around-the-clock support to homeless adults over the age of 18.

She said: “There is a lot of unnecessary stigma attached towards the homeless - and I want to break down those barriers and misconceptions.

“I can tell you now, becoming homeless can happen to anyone, and these people need support during such a difficult time.”

Miss Bains was nominated by Jo Rust, the west Norfolk-based campaigner, for the award and joined celebrities and other influential women at an awards lunch in London.

While there, she mingled alongside television presenter Lorraine Kelly and movie star Nicole Kidman.

The 31-year-old, of North End, said: “I was lucky enough to meet some really inspirational women. The experience has certainly inspired me to keep on doing what I’m doing.”

Among the finalists to receive the ‘Women of the Year Awards’ was a volunteer aid worker who worked on the front line during the ebola crisis, an astrophysicist for her contribution to science and businesswoman who advocates for women in the workplace.

Sandi Toksvig, OBE, President of Women of the Year, said: “The remarkable women who make up the attendees and winners at this year’s lunch are being recognised for their strides in making the world a better place.”
