Swaffham Market will soon need a new auctioneer, the town council said today.

Stephen Green, who currently wields the hammer, will be finishing after next Saturday's market .

Town Clerk Richard Bishop said: “It is disappointing that Mr Green has decided to call it a day, but this does open up a great opportunity for someone else to take on a well established trade every Saturday here in Swaffham.

“The Market is a part of the town's heritage and the auction is extremely important to replace to preserve the traditional values of a market town. It is part of the attraction of Swaffham each weekend.”

Mayor Shirley Matthews said: “Swaffham certainly needs its auction, it goes hand in hand with the market. We wish Mr. Green well in the future and we are sorry that things did not work out for him. Tyrone Roberts was a hard act to follow, but we do hope that someone comes forward and is up for the challenge.”
