Around 65 jobs are set to be created by a new restaurant being opened by McDonald's off the A47 near Norwich.

The burger chain has been given permission to convert the former Little Chef off the A47 roundabout at Brundall into one of its restaurants.

Broadland District Council approved the application for the restaurant, which will have around 50 seats, in December.

Construction work is due to begin at the end of this month, with provisional hopes to have the restaurant open in mid-April.

A McDonald’s spokesman confirmed the restaurant would employ around 65 people, both full and part time workers, and said: “We are delighted to have been granted permission to open our new restaurant in Norfolk and proud to bring 65 full and part-time jobs to the local area.”

The former Little Chef restaurant, on Yarmouth Road, closed more than two years ago and has become something of an eyesore.

It will become the seventh McDonald’s restaurant in the Norwich area, alongside those in Costessey, Hellesdon, Tuckswood, the Hay Hill and Chapelfield stores in the city centre, one in Wroxham and two in Great Yarmouth.

The restaurant, just as with the one on the A47 in the west of Norfolk, near Swaffham, will also include a drive-thru.

Alan Woods, chairman of Postwick and Witton Parish Council, said there had been local worries about the height and illumination of the site’s signs, and about litter.

But he said: “I don’t think we have any big issues. Obviously we have to welcome employment of whatever kind, though, because it is important.

“Bearing in mind what was there before, with Little Chef, this is not so far from what was previously there.

“But there had been concerns that the site was slipping into a state of disrepair and was becoming a bit of an eyesore, so I guess it is good from that point of view.”
