Bakers are being urged to add some heat and spice to their cooking this week to be in with a chance of having their creation served at a well-known Norwich cafe.

The Colman's Mustard Shop and Museum will be hosting a 'Norwich Bake Off' on Friday, in conjunction with Caley's Cocoa Café.

Colman's Mustard, which celebrates its 200th anniversary this year, is synonymous with a British classic - cheese scones. However, in this competition, officials are calling on individuals to create a bake of their choice, incorporating mustard.

A spokesman said: 'Mustard powder can be utilised to enhance the flavour of many other ingredients, including but not limited to, chocolate and coffee.'

'The winner will receive a fantastic food hamper worth £50, and have the chance for their recipe to be featured on the menu at Caley's Cocoa Café.'

Colman's history dates back to 1814 when Jeremiah Colman, a flour miller, took over a mustard manufacturing business based at Stoke Holy Cross, four miles south of Norwich.

In 1823, Jeremiah and his adopted nephew James established J & J Colman which flourished. Best known for mustard, the company made flour, starch, laundry blue and cornflour. The Colman's brand was purchased by Unilever UK & Ireland in 1995.

In 1973, the Mustard Shop was opened to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Colman's. It was originally based in Bridewell Alley and has been in the Royal Arcade since 1999. Ten years later it was taken over by Norwich's Heritage Economic and Regeneration Trust (HEART). Today it is one of Norwich's most popular and cherished tourist attractions, popular with locals and visitors alike.

To enter the Norwich Bake Off, pick up an entry form the Colman's Mustard Shop and Museum or Caley's Cocoa Café, or email melaniemcghee@mustardshopnorwich.co.uk.

All finished bakes need to be submitted to Caley's Cocoa Café on Friday by no later than 1pm, where the judging will commence.

More events celebrating 200 years of Colman's will be held throughout the year including an antiques day on June 7, heritage talks and walks, and a murder mystery night.
