A demolition firm has started work at a popular pub and restaurant ravaged by fire.

Anglian Demolition Tweeted that it had “started the first phase to help get @BrecklandLodge back to its former glory after the devasting fire” after a devastating blaze tore through the venue off the A11 at Attleborough.

Breckland Lodge general manager Colin Kilby later passed on his thanks to the company, which he said had done “an excellent job at making the lounge water tight and therefore saving it from further damage”.

The firm, which is also based in Attleborough, said: “This project is close to our hearts as it is not only the most respected pub, restaurant and motel in the area but also our local.”

Earlier in the week, firefighters revealed that the fire at the family-run business of 35 years had started accidentally.

Investigations as to what caused the inferno are still ongoing but it is thought the fire started in the roof of the bar and restaurant.

The blaze needed more than 60 firefighters to tackle it, with plumes of smoke visible to people from miles around.

The incident caused an outpouring of sadness amongst the venue’s customers, with Breckland Lodge being a familiar sight to motorists travelling along the A11.

However directors of the landmark Norfolk business have stated that while the fire was “tragic” and had caused huge damage, they are “100pc committed to rebuilding Breckland Lodge”.

Their hope is to not only rebuild the premises but make it stronger and better than ever before, with Mr Kilby saying: “We will rebuild and we will rebuild better.”

Chairman Mervyn Negus said: “The devastation inside is pretty severe in places. However some buildings will hopefully be saved including the coffee lounge and bar.”

Mr Kilby said after the fire: “The support we have received from everybody is really important and we are thankfull for all the messages we have received.

“The whole building is gone and we will be closed for a little while.

“But everything can be rebuilt and the most important thing is that everyone is safe and sound.”
