Suffolk brewers Adnams have stirred up storm in a beer glass by extolling the virtues of 'Mighty Norwich City' while not having a shop in Ipswich, their own county town.

The row started during a campaign to provoke interest in Ghost Ship beer with a character called 'Ghostie' that was travelling around Norwich on Saturday.

It was being promoted with a series of tweets telling beer-lovers in the city where they could see the character giving out vouchers to try the new ale.

The last tweet proved too much for some Ipswich Town fans – until recently Southwold-based Adnams supplied the beer to Portman Road.

That said: Did you work out the final #FindGhostie clue? The answer is the Carrow Road Stadium - home to the mighty @NorwichCityFC Find Ghostie and the@AdnamsNR1 team there between 2pm and 2.30pm today to pick up some free Adnams goodies.

That was too much for some Town fans who saw red (or yellow and green) and vented their fury on Adnams, who they saw as true Suffolk heroes. The company deleted the tweet within a few hours and was full of contrition.

They apologised – and then admitted the tweet had been put up by someone who had no knowledge about the sensitivities surrounding the region's football clubs.

Some of the tweets in response pointed out that the Suffolk brewers had a shop in Norwich, but not in Ipswich – although the company does have a store in Bury St Edmunds just a few hundred yards from rival Greene King's brewery.
