A couple who died in a road accident on the A1065 near Fakenham at the weekend were today named as 70-year-old Michael Hannell and his 60-year-old wife, Betty, from Berkhampstead in Hertfordshire.

The couple were in a grey Proton Persona travelling towards the A148 from the Hempton direction when, for reasons unknown, their car veered across the road into path of a silver Mitsubishi Colt, colliding with it head-on.

The three people in the other vehicle all suffered minor chest injuries. The driver, a 72-year-old man, and a female passenger come from the Kent area. The second passenger, a woman, was from Feltwell, near Thetford.

The Hannell's pet dog Cindy survived the crash.

The accident happened just before 3.40pm on Saturday, about 300m the Hempton side of the A148 junction.

The road was closed for several hours.

Police are particularly keen to speak to the driver and passenger of a black Renault Clio that stopped at the scene but left before the police arrived. Anyone with any information about the accident is asked to contact PC Sid Webster on 0845 456 4567.
