Around 150 people packed into the Town Hall in Downham Market to enjoy watching the Royal Wedding on a huge screen.

Town mayor John Fox was delighted and surprised by the amount of people who came into Downham to catch a glimpse of Prince William and Kate Middleton's big day.

He said: 'With all these kinds of events, we didn't know how many people would come along but the Town Hall was full.

'There were around 120 people seated and plenty more standing at the back but the funny thing was you could have heard a pin drop during the service.

'It was an amazing experience and the atmosphere was brilliant throughout with an excellent mixture of families, grannies and single people.'

Following the service, hundreds of people then packed into the market square which hosted a bouncy castle, children's rides, face painting, various stalls and the Hilgay Silver Band.

There was also a prince and princess contest in the afternoon and the four to seven age group winners were Ashton Jones, four, and Ellie Davidson, five.

Mum Becky Jones, who also took daughter Scarlet, six, to the event, said: 'We have all had a brilliant day.

'Scarlet and Ashton have been looking forward to the Royal Wedding all week and really enjoyed watching the wedding.'

Scarlet added: 'I thought Kate's dress was really nice and I thought Westminster Abbey looked pretty.'

American-born Ryan Davidson beamed with pride after his daughter Ellie was given her crown.

The Downham resident said: 'It's been a great day. In America you don't have things like this and I think that's what makes Britain special.'

He added: 'Ellie has had a great day and loved dressing up as a princess.'

In nearby Church Farm, families enjoyed tractor rides, egg and spoon races as well as various fete games including horseshoe coits and guess the weight.

There were also three-legged races and a beat the goalie stand with the Steve Rossell Jazz Trio providing the music.

Downham residents Kate Corletts, Gill Sek and her son Kamonde, two, got into the Royal Wedding spirit by dressing in red, white and blue.

Meanwhile Lituanian mums Ausra Hisinskiene, Kristine Linkevcius, Lina Karpinas and Monika Klimas were delighted by the Royal Wedding celebrations.

Mrs Hisinskiene, who lives in Ely, said: 'We have all had a really nice day and loved every minute of it.

'I thought the wedding was emotional but beautiful and really was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all of us and something we won't forget.'

Elizabeth Esse, who runs the Stow Bardolph farm with husband William, said: 'We have had at least 200 people come along which is fantastic and everyone has got into the spirit of this historic day.

'It has been such a lovely atmosphere with everybody joining in and wearing red, white and blue.

'We asked everyone in the village to come along and the village has really rallied around and people have helped run some of our stalls which has been great.'

Further up the A10, in Shouldham, there was an exciting atmosphere with residents packing the village green and both young and old battling each other in a tug-of-war competition.
