Leading lights from the North Walsham community came together this afternoon to say a final farewell to former 'newshound' Joyce Harmer who recorded local life for more than 60 years.

Mrs Harmer, who died last month aged 87, served as a community news reporter for the North Norfolk News and took birth, marriage and death announcements for the EDP until two years ago.

She filled countless columns of newsprint down the decades with detailed accounts of church, club and charity activities.

Her funeral service was held in North Walsham's St Nicholas Parish Church, where she had worshipped for 80 years. Mourners included her daughter Gwyneth, town mayor Anne Rose, and Virginia Gay, leader of North Norfolk District Council.

The Vicar of North Walsham, The Rev Derek Earis, described her as one of the most energetic and determined people he had ever known. Though born in Wales, he said she had moved to Norfolk as a child and was 'almost Norfolk through and through'.
