A west Norfolk community is closer to getting a village hub with more space for different activities, thanks to £31,650 from the Prince of Wales's rural charity.

The new building in Wereham, near Downham Market, will have a capacity for about 200 people and will provide opportunities for older people to socialise and for other adults to learn new skills.

It will also be used by businesses and the funding will help to support two part-time employees.

The hub will also be the first Passivhaus village hall in the country, which means it will provide a high level of comfort while using very little energy for heating and cooling.

Victoria Gray, chairman of the project, said, 'The funding will enable us to improve life for Wereham, the surrounding communities and local businesses with new facilities and equipment.'

The scheme has previously received grants of £621,000 and £28,000 from the Big Lottery Fund, and the management committee is confident of raising the extra money needed for the £851,000 project.

The new hub will replace the current village hall, which is not fit for purpose, and will be demolished.

The Prince's Countryside Fund has announced £670,000 of vital grant support for rural initiatives across the country.
