A pioneering hearing doctor who has been based at Norfolk's largest hospital for more than a quarter of a century has been honoured by the King.
John FitzGerald, head of audiology services at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is to be made an MBE in the King's Birthday Honours.
Dr FitzGerald, who has been based at the N&N since 1996, has been recognised for services to audiology and healthcare science in Norfolk.
The 62-year-old, who has led the service for the past 26 years, helped to develop an innovative system called SONAR which helped to improve hearing tests for newborn babies.
His dedication to his field has also seen him become trustee for hearing loss charity Hear for Norfolk - while also having served as chairman for the British Society of Audiology.
Dr FitzGerald said: "I received a letter in May and it was a shock - and a very nice surprise.
"It is not something I had expected, so I feel very honoured."
He joins fellow N&N consultant Nick Levell, who was also made an MBE in the honours list.
