A 31-year-old has denied murder after a man died in hospital following a serious assault in a Norfolk town.
Martin Montgomery, 31, had initially been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent after Nigel Mazs, a man in his 50s, was found with serious injuries in Regent Road, Great Yarmouth.
It followed an assault believed to have taken place inside a communal area in a block of flats at Malakoff Close shortly before 12.10pm on December 22 last year.
Mr Mazs was taken to hospital after the incident but died as a result of his injuries on January 4 this year.
Montgomery, of Russell Road, Yarmouth, appeared at Norwich Crown Court on Tuesday when he entered a not guilty plea to murder.
He pleaded guilty to manslaughter but Will Carter, prosecuting, said the plea was not acceptable and he would have to stand trial for murder.
Judge Alice Robinson set a provisional trial date of July 1.
Montgomery, who was represented by John Morgans, was remanded in custody.
A second man in his 20s who was arrested on suspicion of GBH has been released on bail until March this year.
