It is supposed to be the pinnacle of a student's school career, a chance to celebrate their journey in education before taking their next step in life.

But for high school students in Beccles some faced disappointment over missing out on their end of school prom.

Sir John Leman High School in Beccles had arranged a year 11 prom night at the Victoria Hotel in Lowestoft on June 30.

Tickets went on sale last week at £40 per head and all sold out, leading to negative comments on social media platforms.

The school has about 240 students in their final year at school, but issued 180 tickets for the student's send-off party, meaning 60 would have missed out on the fun.

But the school has now announced all tickets will be refunded and go on sale at a later date.

Parent Samantha Porter said: "I think it is terrible that some pupils might miss out.

"I don't know why on earth the school thought that a first come first serve policy would be fair for students.

"Everyone should have the opportunity to celebrate their time at the school and the prom should be a reward for their hard work."

Addressing concerns the school has vowed to make changes to "ease the situation".

Acting headteacher, Ruth Gurney, said: "Whilst there has been discussion on social media regarding the SJL Prom, there have been some changes since the statements made which should ease the situation and we will be informing students and parents in due course."

Mrs Porter believes the school hall is a good enough and "beautiful building" which could host the party for everyone.

She said: "My daughter would be inconsolable if I miss out on buying her a ticket when they go on resale.

"I hope the school change plans so it is accessible for everyone, but I am not convinced they will change the venue."
