With around 20,000 people set to descend on Sheringham and Holt on Saturday, this year's 1940s weekend looks set to go with a swing. The countdown has begun and here's an updated 'everything you need to know' about the biggest event in the North Norfolk Railway calendar.
SHERINGHAM
Attractions at the North Norfolk Railway will include jitterbug dancers and re-enactment groups, as well as a collection of 1940s vehicles and vintage bicycles and music from groups including the Knightingales, the King Size Papas, Timescape and the Skyliner Big Band.
At Weybourne station, volunteers will be serving up wartime rations including spam sandwiches from the Naafi tearooms, with a 'cup of char' on offer at the Institute Tearooms at Holt station.
Trains will be shuttling between Sheringham and Holt approximately every 20 minutes throughout the weekend and there will also be entertainment on Saturday evening.
High street and Station Road will be closed all weekend from 9.30am on Saturday. A military and civilivian parade will set off at 7pm on Saturday from Station Road car park, following the carnival route along Cromer Road, down Beeston Road and back up High Street to the car park.
On Sunday, all those in 1940s dress are invited to join a re-enactors and civilian marching parade, which will assemble outside the Lobster pub, before setting off through the town at 4pm. In a closing ceremony at Station Road car park, a Sheringham Royal British Legion member will play the last post, before speeches and a spitfire flypast.
A park and ride car park will operate all weekend in Cookie's Field, at Beeston Regis.
The Morley Club, on Cromer Road, will be hosting a 1940s-themed beer and cider festival on Saturday and Sunday from 11am, with 10 real ales and five ciders, as well as breakfast baps, burgers and hot dogs.
Shops and businesses will also be getting in on the act, with live music from bands ranging from the Inkpots and Cutting the Mustard, to the Busketeers and the Retro Dolls Duo at local pubs and clubs and a 1940s performance of forties hits at the Trawler fish and chip shop.
Forties fans will also have a chance to have their photo taken at the Driftwood Gallery, in Church Street, and at John Harris Photography, in High Street.
Make-up artist Harriet Foster will be running a 1940s make-up pop-up shop at the Whelk Coppers Tearooms, on the promenade, on Friday from 5.30pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 8am-8pm. To book, phone 07876 827523 or email hfostermakeup@gmail.com
There's a 1940s jive and lindy hop dance with the Jivebunnies at Sheringham Community Centre on Friday from 7pm-11pm. Tickets (priced £8) on the door, bring your own drinks and nibbles.
Sheringham Little Theatre will be holding its traditional 1940s wartime classics singalong at 3.30pm and 7.30pm on Saturday (£10 per session), while, further out of town, 1940s-style duo Swingtime Sweethearts will be performing at the Roman Camp Inn, at Aylmerton, at 7.30pm on Friday and Saturday, with a 1pm performance on Sunday.
SHERINGHAM CHURCHES TOGETHER
There's a NAAFI café with music and karaoke from 10.30am-4pm at the Lighthouse Church, which is also hosting a 1940s tea dance and karaoke session with music from Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band from 2pm-4pm.
The Lighthouse will also be holding a 1940s-style 'Darkest Hour' Sunday service at 10.15am.
At St Andrew's Methodist Church, Rev Ann Bossingham will be leading a 'Mum's the Word' Sunday morning service at 10.30am, featuring forties singer Rachel Eyre. Visitors are invited to come along wearing wartime dress and, after the service, Rachel will sing 1940s favourites on the front lawn, where church members will be serving up spam sandwiches and other wartime treats.
Married couples will have a chance to renew their vows at St Peter's Church at 2pm on Saturday, in a service that last year attracted more than 60 couples. Those taking part. who will also be able to pose for a photo with their faces looking through a 1940s cardboard cut-out, will be presented with a certificate before tucking in to refreshments served up by church volunteers.
Sheringham Salvation Army headquarters, in Cremer Street, will be hosting a special 1940s songs of praise led by Majors Alex and Janet Bishop.
HOLT
Bull Street, Shirehall Plain and Fish Hill will be closed to traffic from 8am-4pm on Saturday, and from 8am-1pm on Sunday.
The North Norfolk Railway will be hosting a United Service Organisation (USO) concert at Holt Station from 10am-4pm. Compered by Andy AV8, the show will feature the Knightingales at 10am and 4pm, Sarah Probert at 12.15pm and Skyliner at 1.30pm.
Nina's wine Bar and Bistro, in Lees Yard, will be transformed into a wartime officers' mess, with jazz and swing on Friday. Open from 7pm.
Winston Churchill will be judging the best shop window display, with the D-Day Darlings, who will be performing at various town venues on Saturday from midday-4pm, picking the winners of a best dressed competition.
Nine pigeons representing the Britain's Got Talent stars will take flight from Holt war memorial at 1pm on Saturday, with the person picking the winning bird collecting a shopping voucher.
Visitors will also have a chance to win prizes including a stay at Byfords Posh Bed and Breakfast, by picking up a ration book and collecting 10 stamps from local retailers.
St Andrew's Church hall will be hosting a 1940s fashion show and afternoon tea on Sunday from 3pm-5pm. Tickets, priced £18, are available from Past Caring, in Chapel Yard. Phone 01263 713771.
The former head of the British Army, General Sir Mike Jackson, will be speaking about his career at the Auden Theatre at 7.40pm on Friday (September 14), while the Syd Lawrence Orchestra will be taking audiences back to the Big Band era on Saturday at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from the theatre on 01263 713444.
Other attractions around the town will include music at various town venues and a wartime market in Bull Street, with art, craft and vintage stalls, as well as military vehicle displays.
