Sixty golfers dug deep in their pockets to support this year's civic charity, Big C, at an event at Sprowston Manor - and it even stayed fine for the occasion.

Norwich Sheriff Chris Higgins said: 'It was a terrific day and I was really grateful for the support given to me. At the moment everybody wants to do charity golf days, and in the current economic climate it's difficult to get time off work and to give much, but people really stepped up for it.

'The course is in immaculate condition and, despite a few drops of rain, the weather got better during the day.'

Yesterday's event was also attended by the Big C's chief executive Daniel Williams who spread the message that the charity was local.

The event, which raised 1400 for the Big C, featured a series of competitions including an 18-hole individual and team event, longest drive and nearest the pin, and there was also a two-course dinner and prize giving.
