Thousands of people in Earlham and Costessey were without electricity for four hours today after a power cut.

Power was restored to most customers by about 6.20pm, and to all customers by 8.10pm.

Traffic lights and pedestrian crossings were also out of action following the incident.

A spokesman for UK Power Networks said: 'We would like to thank all our customers for their patience.'

A spokesman for Norfolk County Council said that 18 traffic lights and pedestrian crossing sites were out of action following the power cut, which happened at about 3.50pm.

Fire crews from Sprowston, Hethersett and Wymondham and the water carrier from Hethersett attended a fire in the electrical sub-station in Cunningham Road, Earlham just before 4pm. This was extinguished before arrival of the brigade and handed over to UK Power Networks.

There have also been reports that the power cut prevented pupils and staff leaving West Earlham Middle School, because the electric doors would not open. It is understood the pupils and staff had to use the fire escape to leave the building.

Shops and businesses in the area also had to close early due to the power cut.
