Should traffic lights be installed at the Fiveways roundabout on the A11?

A bid to see traffic lights at the “dangerous” Fiveways roundabout near Mildenhall has gained the backing of West Suffolk MP Matt Hancock.
More than 2,000 people have signed a petition calling for the Conservative MP to ensure drastic safety improvements are made at the notoriously busy A11, A1101 and A1065 junction.
The calls for changes come after several collisions at the junction since a 9.5-mile section of the road was dualled from Thetford to Fiveways.
The petition, created by Louise Foreman on the 38Degrees website, reads: “You [Mr Hancock] stated in a letter [in] December 2014 to residents of Mildenhall that the dual carriageway would help people living in Mildenhall to get around. This is not the case and we would appreciate your assistance by solving the continuing traffic issues at Fiveways before fatalities occur.
“Residents of Mildenhall and other regular users of this roundabout are seriously concerned about motorists’ safety due to the volumes of traffic that are now accessing the A11.
“The majority of people local to Fiveways roundabout, Barton Mills, and other regular users have stated that they would like to see traffic lights at the roundabout and/or a flyover.”
After meeting the leader of the Safety At Fiveways campaign, Wendy Chipping, last week, Mr Hancock made it clear that he agrees with the need to permanently change the layout at Fiveways, including the installation of traffic lights.
Speaking afterwards, he said: “I fully support the campaign to improve Fiveways roundabout and will do all I can to see it happen. It is clear that something needs to be done to address both the congestion and the accidents that are all too common.
“I will continue to raise this matter with the Secretary of State for Transport as well as Suffolk County Council. The number of people who have signed the petition speaks volumes about the strength of local feeling on this matter.”
