It's not your usual set of 'wheels' at auction but bidders can secure their very own Second World War tank when a 'Grizzly' Sherman model comes up for auction later this month.

Appropriately, the M4A1 Sherman is to be sold at Duxford Imperial War Museum, as part of an extensive and varied H&H Classics sale on October 13 and 14.

The tank is in amazing condition, with anecdotal evidence suggesting many of the 188 ever built by Canada's Montreal Locomotive Works were used to train Canadian troops in England before their trips to the front lines of European combat.

So few were produced in Canada because the war had turned in favour of the Allies, leading military leaders to judge that US Sherman production would be sufficient for the war effort.

This Grizzly was part of a batch that was sold to the Portuguese Army, amazingly remaining in service until the early 1980s.

Since entering private ownership it has been fitted with special CPD tracks that don't damage road surfaces, although it's not clear as to whether the tank is fully road legal.

The price for this little piece of history? H&H Classics estimates its value at £150,000 to £200,000 – the same ballpark as a number of supercars and luxury limousines.

Damian Jones, of H&H Classics, said: 'For a military enthusiast, I imagine it would be great to own your own Sherman Grizzly. And, in an age that is in love with cross-country 4x4 traction, here is the ultimate 'go-anywhere' vehicle.'
