Practical, big-value SsangYong Musso picks up from Korando Sports

The SsangYong Musso pick-up is looking to build on the reputation set by the Korando Sports. Has it succeeded? Andrew Evans finds out.
The Musso is an updated version of the Korando Sports pick-up but with a new name from SsangYong’s past.
Musso – Korean for ‘rhinoceros’ – brings not only an exterior update and rebadge, but also a new engine, the Euro 6-compliant 2.2-litre diesel, paired with either a six-speed manual or new six-speed automatic.
The new engine’s extra punch improves the towing rating and boosts combined economy by about 5%.
Looks and image
The Musso pick-up, for the most part, is just as good to look at as its rivals.
The redesigned cabin looks interesting, with an asymmetric set-up that proves a little awkward to use at first and has a few strange details, and switchgear feels solid.
Space and practicality
No questions about the Musso’s practicality. The cabin is vast and even three in the back isn’t a problem, making it great for families.
The 2.04 sq m load bay will take a standard Euro pallet and the 1,312-litre load bed is fully lined, with tie-down points inside. A range of load covers means you can use it as a secure load area or put a camper back on it.
Total payload is still one tonne but the Musso can now tow up to three tonnes, bringing it into contention with more expensive rivals.
Selectable 4x4 with low ratios will cope when the going gets tough.
Behind the wheel
Unlike most pick-ups, the Musso has independent rear suspension which gives it a surprisingly compliant ride whether running empty or fully loaded. Without the extra weight, the Musso can get a little soggy over bumps, but, by and large, it’s better than rivals that stick to more basic suspension.
The steering is a bit mushy and vague at speed and there’s also wind noise from the huge wing mirrors – it’s expected for this type of vehicle. Otherwise, it’s happy to sit at motorway speeds but there’s a little bit of body roll if change lane too quickly.
The EX version’s reversing camera makes the bulky Musso a breeze to park but it would benefit from front parking sensors.
Value for money
The Musso SE at £15,995 (excluding VAT) gets 18in alloy wheels, leather-look seats, front and rear electric windows, power folding door mirrors, manual air conditioning, CD and RDS radio with iPod and Bluetooth connectivity and a multi-function steering wheel.
EX adds black 18in alloys, roof rails, leather seats – heated in the front and electrically adjustable for the driver, a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen, rear view camera with parking sensors, front LED daytime running lights, auto headlamps and wipers and cruise control, for £17,995. The automatic gearbox is £1,000.
Who would buy one?
If you’re self-employed and have a family, the Musso pick-up makes a lot of sense. Alongside being cheap – particularly if you can claim the VAT back – and practical, it’s roomy and comfortable enough to accommodate the kids when not put to work.
