Campaigners against rail fare increases will be taking part in a national protest outside Norwich Railway Station in the new year.

Supporters of NOR4NOR, Norfolk for Nationalisation of Rail, will gather by the station on January 2, from 10am-noon and 4-6pm.

The average price for a Greater Anglia ticket will go up by 3.4pc on January 2 2018, according to the Rail Delivery Group.

It will be the biggest hike in rail prices since 2013, when fares leaped by 3.9pc.

NOR4NOR has condemned the price hike. The fare increases mean an off-peak day return ticket from Ipswich to Norwich will rise from £17.60 to £18.20.

Speaking about the price hike earlier in December, a Greater Anglia spokesman said: 'The 3.4pc increase applies to Government regulated fares, such as season tickets and anytime singles and returns.'

The firm was freezing its advance fares, which could be 60-70pc lower than walk-up fares.
