Putting the MG into NMG… and Isuzu too
NMG has taken on two iconic, heritage automotive marques in MG and Isuzu and is looking forward to building the brands in Norfolk. Managing director Grant Long tells motoring editor Andy Russell why they are a good fit with the NMG business.
Norwich-based NMG has added two new franchises to the family-owned motor group’s portfolio by taking on the MG and Isuzu brands.
The new brands are launched after NMG, short for Norfolk Motor Group, relinquished its Suzuki main dealer franchise, having held it since 1982, but it remains a Suzuki approved service partner and will continue to provide aftersales and sell used Suzukis.
NMG this month officially became an MG dealer and the Isuzu franchise goes live on Monday.
Both MG and Isuzu are housed in the former Suzuki dealership in Mile Cross Lane with seven MGs and four Isuzu D-Max pick-ups in the showroom. NMG also has five MG demonstrators, covering the full model range of ZS and GS SUVs and the MG3 supermini, and three D-Max demonstrators and two courtesy vehicles.
Managing director Grant Long said: “We were very disappointed to be losing the Suzuki franchise as we were the second longest-serving dealer so we are doing everything we can to retain our loyal customers and the ideal fit was the new MG range of ZS, MG3 and GS.
“MG is an exciting product and has just launched a range with five and, on ZS, seven-year warranties, offering value for money and high specifications – it really was a no-brainer to take on the franchise,” he explained.
“NMG is a heritage company, having been launched in 1969, and MG is a heritage brand. We believe, over the years, we have built our reputation establishing such brands in Norfolk.
“We believe we can build on our heritage with the MG franchise and play a big part in bringing its new range of products to market.”
MG’s parent company, SAIC Motor Corporation, is the largest vehicle manufacturer in China and ranked 41 in Amercian-based Fortune magazine’s Fortune 500 list.
Mr Long said that both MG and Isuzu were iconic brands in their respective fields.
“We have been so keen to acquire the Isuzu franchise in my 18 years at NMG.”
Several Norwich dealerships have had on the Isuzu franchise over the years so taking it on is the culmination of a lot of work by NMG which has considerable experience of 4x4 brands.
“Isuzu is an incredible franchise – it has a tremendous reputation and it is another iconic manufacturer. We are delighted to have been awarded the Isuzu franchise and it fits with our heritage.
“Being in the market garden, farming community and a rural area, we believe we can build on the strength of this brand. This is the third largest territory for Isuzu in the UK.”
He said that the latest Isuzu D-Max’s new 1.9-litre turbo diesel engine complied with the current Euro 6 emissions standard without needing for a separate AdBlue tank to minimise harmful emissions.
NMG has also been a Kia dealer since 1999 and is one of the brand’s leading independent UK family dealerships with 1,200 new and used sales a year.
