SPONSORED: What if you could jump start your car and get yourself out of trouble? Well, with the right product you can.

A flat car battery on an icy winter’s day is not exactly every driver’s idea of a good time. Unfortunately, it is a problem that becomes all-too-common as the temperature starts to drop.

However, there is a way to prevent a lengthy wait at the side of the road, and it comes in the form of your own personal jump starter. These power packs come in several shapes and sizes, depending on your needs, but they aren’t necessarily bulky pieces of equipment.

A compact jump starter is surprisingly small but can still get many cars out of trouble. You can take a look at the compact power pack (on sale at £54.99) on the Wilco Direct website.

Breakdown blues

Last year, the RAC rescued 2,402,225 motorists who had broken down in the winter months. The prime culprit for the call-outs was a failed battery, which becomes more vulnerable to faults as the chill sets in. Indeed, 31% of breakdowns attended by the RAC last year were the result of battery issues.

However, 2015 was a mild winter. This year the forecasters are full of doom and gloom and are anticipating a return to the arctic conditions last seen in 2010. In November of that year, the number of breakdowns in the hardest-hit areas of the South East, East Anglia, London, the East Midlands and Yorkshire soared. At one point the RAC was receiving an average of 2,300 calls an hour from stranded motorists.

Jump out of trouble

If the forecasters are right, motorists could be in for another winter of breakdown blues. If you have a jump starter charged and ready to go, you could kick-start your car without calling for help.

The compact power pack in particular is a powerful product in a lightweight package. It could fit into your pocket, your glovebox or under the passenger seat, which means you don’t have to lug heavy equipment around.

Despite its small size, it can jump start a petrol engine of up to 3.5 litres or a diesel engine of 2.5 litres, using just 40% of its power. It also comes in a handy case which includes a complete jump start kit of booster cables and an LED torch.

If you need something with a little more power, search the Wilco Direct website for more options.

Don’t get stranded

Products such as the compact jump starter don’t just boost the battery of your car – they can also be used to charge your other essential electrical devices, such as mobile phones and tablets.

USB sockets and inverters mean that you can plug in your phone, so if you break down and can’t get yourself out of trouble, you don’t have to worry about your phone being flat.

This can also come in handy on the long journeys that take us away to family and friends over the Christmas break. Keeping your phone charged up via the jump starter means that you can report any delays or have a long hands-free conversation while on your journey. You can also ensure that your in-car entertainment, tablets and laptops don’t run out of power either. Simply plug in the devices with their USB cables and you can re-charge them. The sat-nav can also be plugged in to prevent wrong turns.

Prepare for winter

Of course, prevention is better than cure, so while having a jump starter in your arsenal means that you may be able to avoid a flat battery this winter, it’s always a good idea to give your car a once-over before heading out on the winter roads or making a long journey. Ensure you check the oil, coolant, screenwash levels and your tyres to make sure your chances of breaking down are at their slimmest.
