Drivers will face major disruption later this month, when a key roundabout on Norwich's busy ring road is closed in all directions for at least five days.
The Dereham Road/Sweet Briar Road roundabout will be shut from Monday, May 28, during half-term week, so the revamped roundabout can be resurfaced.
It will mean traffic will not be able to cross the roundabout, affecting the tens of thousands of motorists who use the ring road and Dereham Road.
Council bosses have acknowledged the closure will be disruptive and frustrating, but that doing the work over half-term, when roads tend to be less busy, was the 'least worst' option.
Diversions will be put in place, including via roads such as the Broadland Northway, Earlham Road, Boundary Road, Larkman Lane, Bowthorpe Road and the Southern Bypass.
As well as causing disruption for drivers, bus services will be affected. First services 21, 22, 23/23A, 24/24A and 26 will be diverted, while Konectbus 5 will not run between Larkman Lane and where the Earl of Leicester pub used to be in Dereham Road.
The work will mark the end of a nine-month project to build a new roundabout as part of the Transport for Norwich scheme. Transport bosses say that will improve journey time and reliability for all traffic.
John Fisher, chair of Norwich Highways agency committee, said: 'This is a significant event for the city's transport network and the decision for a full road closure has not been taken lightly.
'On balance, this approach represents the quickest, safest and most efficient way to complete the work to the best possible standard.
'We're asking all road users to help us minimise the impact of the closure by avoiding the area, planning ahead and leaving extra time.
'We understand that it will be disruptive and frustrating for all those affected and really appreciate people's patience while work takes place.
'Improving the Dereham Road/Sweet Briar Road roundabout has been a large-scale project, which is now entering its final phase.
'The newly-upgraded junction will not only improve journey times for all traffic but will also increase its potential capacity for the future.'
The closure is due to begin at 6am on Monday, May 28, with the roundabout re-opening at midnight on Friday, June 1.
