The A12 Bascule bridge in the town will be closed overnight from Monday (January 23) while improvement works are carried out.

Highways chiefs plan to carry out the work next week, with the town's three-lane bridge being closed overnight for more than 25 nights as work is carried out between 8pm and 6am. Diversions will be put in place while the bridge is closed, and road users are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for travel.

A spokesman for Highways England said: 'The closure is for essential repair and maintenance work. We plan to start work on Monday, January 23, finishing by Monday, February 20. To keep road users at a safe distance from the works, we will close the A12 crossing on Bascule bridge while we are working. 'There will be clearly signed diversion routes in place.'

National traffic travelling northbound will be diverted to the A1117 Bloodmoor Road, at the A12/A1117 Bloodmoor Road roundabout continuing on the A1117 (Bloodmoor Road, Elm Tree Road, Cotmer Road) to its junction with the A146 Bridge Road, turn left onto the A1117 Bridge Road. The continue on the A1117 (Normanston Drive, Millennium Way, Bentley Drive) to re-join the A12 Yarmouth Road. Southbound traffic will use the same routes in the opposite direction.

Local traffic travelling northbound will be diverted off the A12 London Road, onto the A146 Pier Terrace continuing along Horn Hill, Waveney Drive and Victoria Road, turn right to join the A1117 and cross the bridge, continue to follow the A1117 Normanston Drive to the roundabout with Peto Way, then head right to Denmark Road, continuing to join the A12 Waveney Road, and vice versa for southbound traffic.

A free hourly bus service will be provided for pedestrians wanting to cross the bridge.
