Angry drivers today issued a 'sort it out' plea to highways bosses, after weeks of frustrating delays at Norwich's Thickthorn roundabout.

Recent weeks have seen motorists driving into Norwich along the A11 facing lengthy delays, once they reach the roundabout on the city's outskirts.

Problems with traffic light synchronisation have been holding up motorists, with just a handful of vehicles able to get through the lights before they change back to red.

Seven days ago, that led to morning queues of more than two miles, but a spokeswoman for Highways England, which is responsible for the set of lights, said the problem had been fixed at 4pm that day.

However, drivers said, a week on and that has not solved the problem, with long delays are continuing. At rush hours, Highways England's own Traffic England website has stated that traffic between Thickthorn and Wymondham has been stuck in delays of up to 30 minutes.

A spokeswoman for Norfolk County Council confirmed: 'We are still getting reports of delays at the Thickthorn junction and are passing these on to Highways England.'

During rush hour last night there were delays between Wymondham and Norwich once again, while yesterday morning exasperated motorists took to Twitter to express their annoyance at yet more hold-ups.

Joanna Mason tweeted: 'The A11 Thickthorn junction is terrible again today with 20min queue due to the lights', while Jenny Simpson wrote: 'More major delays on A11 this morning at #Thickthorn adding 20 mins to my long journey to work. Please fix! Been weeks now…'

Laurence Grunbaun said: 'The traffic lights northbound A11 at Thickthorn are an absolute joke, letting 3 cars through at a time!' and Robert Muir tweeted: 'Thickthorn tailbacks AGAIN! Lights duff and need fixing.'

Sarah R tweeted: 'it is ridiculous. Been the same for weeks now and making the commute painful' and Hilary Winch wrote: 'What has happened to traffic lights @ thickthorn! Nightmare traffic for morning commute in August!'

And Amanda Jones emailed us to say: 'These have been bad for at least a fortnight regardless of time of day I commute from Attleborough to Broadland business park - a journey which is now taking 50 minutes compared to 25 minutes for the return. The queue this morning was about 1.7 miles at about 8.25am.'

A Highways England spokeswoman said they were looking into the problem.

She said: 'We are investigating the reported traffic light issue on the A11 and will carry out any necessary repairs as soon as possible.'
