The road is completely blocked after the accident which happened at 4.35am.

There is no word on the condition of the pedestrian who was involved in the accident, but it is understood that he was thought to be seriously hurt.

The police vehicle and ambulance were not on emergency calls. They did not have blue lights showing.

Suffolk Police have informed the Independent Office for Police Conduct about this incident, as is standard procedure because it involves one of the force’s own vehicles.

Traffic heading westbound is being diverted off the A14 at Woolpit and sent along the A1088 and the A143 to rejoin the A14 at the Bury St Edmunds Central junction.

Other local traffic is expected to find other alternative routes. During the morning there was no serious congestion on the diversionary routes.
