A man has been arrested following an operation to check visitors at Wayland Prison.

Officers carried out a day of action on Friday, searching all visitors attending the prison for items such as drugs, psychoactive substances and mobile phones.

They were joined by the Dog Unit, the Special Constabulary and prison staff, along with the Norfolk and Suffolk Roads Policing Unit who carried out roadside drug tests and vehicle checks.

A man in his 30s, from Greenford in Middlesex, was arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis, driving whilst disqualified, driving without insurance and drug-driving. He was taken into custody and later released on police bail pending further enquiries until March 5 and his vehicle was seized.

A second man, aged 39, from Hackney in London, was reported for driving whilst disqualified without insurance, whilst a third man, in his 20s, from New Romney in Kent, was issued with a cannabis caution for personal possession of cannabis.

PC Paula Gilluley, Norfolk Constabulary's Prison Liaison Officer at HMP Wayland, said: 'This was another successful operation with our colleagues at HMP Wayland and is a continuation of our robust approach targeting visitors who try to bring smuggle illicit items into the prison.

'Our message is clear, we will not tolerate this kind of criminal activity and we will take action against those who try and break the law.

'We will continue to work with HMP Wayland to ensure the prison remains a safe place for staff to work in and for prisoners to stay.'
