Whilst fireworks may be a delight for us humans, for many pets the noise and lights can be quite traumatic.

Watch our video with Dogs Trust Snetterton on advice for pet owners this bonfire night.

• Walk your dog before it gets dark - there is less likely to be fireworks going in the daylight so try and walk your doggy before it gets dark. Your pet will also then feel more relaxed and tired in the evening when the fireworks do begin.

• Make sure your house and garden are secure - dogs react in funny ways to fireworks and you don't want your pooch suddenly running through an open gate or door.

• Set up somewhere safe for your dog - a nice comfortable spot, even if it is tucked behind the sofa, will make your pet feel safe and relaxed if they do get stressed. Don't try and drag them out from their 'safe space', just let them calm down and come out on their own.

• Provide lots of activities - if you have an energetic dog make sure you provide lots of games to keep them distracted from the fireworks. Tasty treats also help.

• Build a doggy den - if you have some kind of crates you can build a 'doggy den' for your dog to relax. You can even use chairs and blankets, or a cosy space under the stairs. Fill it with comfy pillows and other things that smell like you.
