The first year that we have welcomed Springwatch to Minsmere has been full of firsts for the BBC team too.

Never before have they been able to share a ringside seat inside an elusive bittern nest, show an avocet laying its eggs live on camera or broadcast footage of the predatory antics of an antlion.

As well as making compelling viewing, this new footage is providing us with an incredible insight into the science of Minsmere's wildlife. We've begun to learn about our bittern mums, and what it takes to successfully rear their chicks; we have gained an understanding of our nesting birds' varying family dynamics, and we've found out even more about what's eating what, and when!

So, as the images fade from our TV screens this week, the impact that the BBC has had on the reserve will live on, and Springwatch turns Neighbourhood Watch as we apply this valuable new knowledge to further protect our wild tenants.
