I read with interest, and I must admit a bit of exasperation, the letter from Mrs Mead (August 15) entitled 'Where are all the cyclists?'.

The answer, Mrs Mead, is that you and other drivers are the cyclists that should be using these lanes. Leave your car at home and get yourself a bike to get around our fine city. You will soon stop asking 'Why are the council providing cycle lanes?' and be asking 'Why aren't the council providing more?' You will also find that despite the work done so far, there is so much more that still needs to be done. You will also hopefully find our the many benefits of using more healthy and less polluting means of transport.

As for paying for these things — Mrs Mead do you really think that roads are paid for purely from vehicle excise duty? Of course they are not. Roads and cycle ways are paid for, in the main, from general taxation which we all pay and should all benefit from.

In so many ways, Mrs Mead, 'On your bike'!
