What does a 1980s ‘upside down’ house for sale for £950,000 in Cringleford, Norwich look like?
It was the year of shoulder pads, Ghostbusters and Springsteen's Born in the USA when this house was built on land nestled away from view on the banks of the River Yare in Cringleford. Property editor Caroline Culot went to visit Yare House, Newmarket Road, for sale for £950,000 with Warners.
It made a refreshing change to visit a 1980s house which has been brought into the 21st century by its owner of the past 14 years. It's squirrelled away down a little road just going through Cringleford which you'd never know was there and it's an 'upside down' house with all the main accommodation on the first floor. When I arrived, the owner was sitting on his balcony in the sunshine, really private, yet just a few minutes walk to Waitrose as your corner shop. So, upstairs most of the rooms have lovely wide windows looking out over the three quarters of an acre garden which leads down to the River Yare, hence its name, with many established trees. You can just see the A11 through the trees but you could add more screening and the marvellous thing about the house is that it really isn't overlooked. Inside, you go upstairs into the main salon which has three windows and patio doors to a side patio area. As the house is built on a slope, you have incredible varying levels with this property but it's really novel in that its main rooms are on the upper floor so with those gorgeous views. The salon is massive with a feature open fireplace and you also have a separate dining room and a very large, modern kitchen with double thickness granite work surfaces.

This room has the balcony and so you can enjoy morning coffee and breakfast sitting out in the sun in your own personal paradise. It also feels like it would make a really great party house; you have so much space and I can imagine people spilling out onto the balcony and drinking champagne under the stars. On the same level you have a master bedroom and en suite shower room, three further bedrooms and a fifth/study as well as a really large, contemporary family bathroom and a cloakroom. Everything is impeccably presented and ask the owner about his special chairs - I can't say what his profession was but there is a very good story he may just tell you if you ask about the chairs in the house!
On the ground floor you have a really good sized laundry room/utility as well as a shower room which is currently used as storage and a massive games room currently housing a full size snooker table which is not included in the sale! This is a converted garage building and has a conservatory/garden room however there is plenty of storage with this house with a triple garage and hot tub too! This is a really interesting house in its design but offers lots of flexibility and is in a fabulous location yet hidden away from view.
