The wonders of Wymondham (and Attleborough too!)

Wymondham and Attleborough are the south-west market town hubs, accessed just off the A11 so with easy access into the city or out of the county. Property editor Caroline Culot spoke to one of the locally based estate agents, Graeme Taplin, of TW Gaze, on what is the appeal of living there.

Wymondham is an historic Norfolk market town with great heritage interest and obvious infrastructure benefits such as quality schooling, good shops and a thriving business community. But what Mr Taplin really says is putting it on the map is its great transport links with convenient access into the city off the dualled A11 which can now take you to London in less than two hours.

The dualling of the road completed in 2014, enables a journey from Wymondham to London in less than 2 hours.

'There are also buses running until late in the evening,' said Mr Taplin. 'The area offers excellent education and childcare options. Wymondham is very fortunate to have high quality schooling including Wymondham High Academy; Wymondham College which is a unique state day and boarding school situated on the edge of town; along with Robert Kett Primary School and Browick Road Community Primary School.

'Demand for quality housing within school catchment areas influences buying decisions across the country and Wymondham is no different.

'New housing developments are springing up around the town precincts, whilst the surrounding villages are popular for families wanting a more sedate environment.

'Villages like Morley St Botolph, Wicklewood, Spooner Row and Silfield to name a few, lie within a coupe of miles of the town, retaining access to all the great amenities that Wymondham provides.'

Then there is the high street which offers a range of shops. Mr Taplin said: 'Quaint independent shopping is complemented by three mainstream supermarkets including a Waitrose, Morrisons and the Co-Op.

'Pretty much everything you need is available within the town precinct – you will find a traditional hardware store, dry cleaners, several 'mens and ladies' fashion shops, antique shops, a sporting gun outlet, bicycle retailer as well as bakers, butchers, hairdressers, a medical centre, dentist…the list goes on.

'What I really like though is its history. You have at the centre, the famous Wymondham Abbey which was founded in 1107 as a priory for Benedictine monks. Just down the road from the abbey is the Mid-Norfolk railway station and railway line that continues to run tourist steam trains through the summer months to Dereham, via rural village stops along the line.

'Sporting interests and community leisure associations are also well catered for in Wymondham. There are rugby, football and cricket clubs supporting junior and senior teams, tennis and bowls clubs. There is a local theatre and drama group, and variety of collectors and model clubs and of course around the town there are some fabulous dining, from award winning a la carte menus to Moroccan, Thai and traditional pub food.'
