A councillor has raised fears about risks to health and property if a proposal to site up to 500 homes under a flightpath is approved.

Forest Heath District Council has earmarked a site off Green Road in Brandon for the homes in its Local Plan.

The council is looking to put the plan out for consultation at some point this month.

But Bill Bishop, district councillor for Brandon East, says the site is unsuitable, and would leave residents at risk of health problems and of their homes being damaged.

Mr Bishop's concern is that the estate would be blighted by the effects of aircraft taking off from RAF Lakenheath. The base's runway is in a direct line with the proposed site, three miles away.

Noise pollution, vibrations from aircraft and even damage to homes could be an issue, according to Mr Bishop

In a letter to the council, he said: 'I have 17 different articles from many different sources which all give very clear indications of the possible great causes of bad health including heart failure which have occurred to residents residing near or under an aircraft activity.

'I will be trying to get my fellow councillors to stop this development and replace these 500 dwellings in a more suitable site. If this does not happen I will be an active part of the consultation in Brandon hoping that we will not place residents in a very dangerous site.'

A spokesman for Forest Heath confirmed that the site would be considered as part of the council's consultation.

'A number of sites throughout the district will be put forward for consultation as part of the development of the Forest Heath Local Plan.

'This wide-ranging consultation is due to start in February and we will be encouraging everyone with an interest in the future of their town or village to take part and let us have their views about the suggested allocations for housing and employment sites,' she said.

The proposed site allocations were approved on November 26.
