While picking MPs' thoughts recently about whether George Osborne could be the next Tory leader, one suggested that the Conservative party had a problem with posh people at its helm.

That's not that surprising unless, however, it is a Tory backbencher doing the talking.

The blue MP told me: 'I just can't see the party going for another Etonian, I think they will have had enough.

'It's not the cutting of the taxes, but the people that have introduced the cuts that seems to be the real problem for us.

'The biggest problem for the Tories is that people think it's the party of privilege. So you have a leader that has been obsessed with decontamination of the party brand, and yet with his background he is a big part of that very problem – I think that rankles.'
