Meet the Suffolk artist and sculptor
Alice Andrea Ewing, is an artist and founder-sculptor based in Suffolk. She established her foundry and studio in the county alongside the craft-design studio, Pomarius. Pomarius produces limited edition bronze casts of the produce of gardens and orchards around the UK. A collection from the series has been donated to a legacy auction being announced next week. She has exhibited in the UK, USA, Australia and the Netherlands, she is currently collaborating with the fashion brand Loewe on their 2021 collection. Here she speaks with Gina Long
What’s the impact of COVID-19 and how have you adapted?
I’ve spent a lot more time at home and in the immediate area. Luckily I’ve not had to stop going to the studio because it’s so out of the way - the joke in this household is we’re already pretty socially distanced.
What is your connection to East Anglia?
I was born here and grew up in Woodbridge.
What is your East Anglian Heaven ie what do you love most about East Anglia?
I’m a fan of the coastline in winter. I actually much prefer it to the coast here in summer, I find it better lends itself to long grey days and the cold.
What is your East Anglian Hell ie what you hate most about living here?
Probably the fear of fields becoming thousands of houses.
What’s your favourite East Anglian restaurant?
Tricky! I’m a big fan of pub food actually and there are so many good ones in East Anglia to choose from.
What’s your favourite way to spend an East Anglian evening?
Either in the garden at home or wandering about on the beach at Walberswick.
What’s your favourite East Anglian landmark?
Orford Ness.
What’s the best thing that happens in East Anglia every year?
The spring. Or the autumn, now it’s coming around.
What your specialist Mastermind subject?
The ability to fall asleep quickly and deeply.
What is always in your fridge?
Capers.
What’s your simple philosophy of life?
Get a good night’s sleep.
What’s your favourite film?
There are probably a few I’ll always rewatch but it will depend on the mood I’m in!
What was your first job?
Working at the Wild Strawberry Cafe on Market Hill, Woodbridge.
What is your most treasured possession?
I’d like to say my dog but he might embarrass me in public too often. He’s a treasure when he actually listens.
Who do you admire most?
Old sages.
What is your biggest indulgence?
Really nice pyjamas - several of them. But sometimes also buying flowers for myself…
What do you like about yourself most?
I think I might have good hands.
What’s your worst character trait?
Inability to switch off.
Where is your favourite holiday destination?
Still deciding.
Best day of your life?
Still waiting.
What’s your favourite breakfast?
A good cup of coffee.
What’s your favourite tipple?
All the tipples.
What’s your hidden talent?
I’m not sure I have a hidden talent - does being double-jointed count?
When were you most embarrassed?
When the staff at the Hamilton Kerr Institute had to nurse me following an incident with a partially restored Veronese, the consequences of a big night out, and my very quick exit mid-lecture when the smell of rabbit glue became a little too much to handle.
What’s your earliest memory?
It’s one of three but I’m not sure which is the earliest - feeding a butterfly sugar or realising I shouldn’t be playing with this box of matches.
Or rolling off the side of the treehouse to see what would happen.
What song would you like played at your funeral?
Goodness. Something devastating.
Tell us something people don’t know about you?
I am allergic to penicillin.
What’s the worst thing anyone has ever said to you?
I wouldn’t want to repeat that here.

In part, serendipity. Increasingly, rootedness.
What do you want to tell our readers about most?
An upcoming collaboration with Loewe through my Pomarius studio - you can see the works in their current campaign.
