Under the Hammer: more news of what is making the salerooms buzz from Kevin Lines of Keys Fine Art Auctioneers of Aylsham, the leading East Anglian fine art and antiques auction house.
January is often a quiet time in the auction world, with dealers and collectors alike taking time to re-emerge after the Christmas break. So it has been refreshing to see two very successful Antiques and Interiors sales at the Aylsham salerooms in the new year, which saw a variety of interesting lots attract good bids from both those in the room and those bidding online.
These fortnightly sales can throw up a huge mix of lots, from attractive pieces at prices which are very accessible, to more niche and unusual lots which can achieve good prices if there is a specialist bidder or two taking part in the auction.
Interesting items sold included:
An Eastern hardwood carved Buddha with raised arms, together with a further Oriental hardwood carved stand with circular bronze pierced dragon panel, on a fretwork stand, which sold for £460.
A suite of modern Waterford crystal black glassware comprising a pair of slender-stemmed tall candlesticks, pair of decorative champagne glasses and a ship's decanter, all decorated with clear hobnail cut panels, which sold for £130.
A mahogany violin dating from 1780, bearing the label 'Laurentius Storini Fecit Cremone', together with fitted case, which sold for £1,600.
A mahogany chest of four full-width drawers, on bracket feet, which sold for £620.
A Troika wheel lamp base decorated in geometric patterns, with a Troika mark to the base, which sold for £140.
A collection of various Sutcliffe and other clockwork model boats, which sold for £420.
A 19th-century fruitwood small spinning wheel and attachments, with turned supports on a splayed base and a cast wheel, which sold for £200.
A watercolour by 20th-century British artist Elizabeth Gray entitled 'Barnacle Geese', which sold for £880.
