A war medal awarded to a fearless Norwich soldier who risked his life to save wounded colleagues sold for £2,040 when it went under the hammer at auction.

The Military Medal was awarded to Private Cecil Herbert Moyse, who was with the Royal Army Medical Corps, for his heroism in protecting fellow soldiers from snipers and mortar shelling in a French town the day after D-Day.

Pte Moyse, then 34, was credited with having saved many lives through his actions on June 7, 1944.

Now - nearly 70 years later - his Military Medal, which was expected to sell for between £600 and £800 at Bonhams in Knightsbridge, London, sold today (Wednesday) to a 'mystery bidder' for around three times that amount.

Pte Moyse was born at Carlton Colville, near Lowestoft, on March 11, 1910, and lived with his sister Audrey and parents Herbert and Lucy, at Diamond Terrace in Oulton Broad. He later moved to the Norwich area, and was 61 when he died there in March 1971.

The silver Military Medal was introduced on March 25, 1916.
