Whether film or stage show, there’s something delightfully cheeky about The Producers. The 1968 movie starring Gene Wilder is a great favourite of mine. But this live edition at Norwich Puppet Theatre is packed with good acting and great gags, and reminded me of all that I loved in that original.

The story pokes fun at everyone. Producer (John Mangan) cooks up a scam with accountant (Gavin Bromley). It turns out that it’s much more financially rewarding to back a flop than a hit, and the pair of them can’t resist the temptation. The catastrophically funny musical which results becomes an overnight hit.

Director Peter Beck and his team pay homage to past versions of Mel Brooks’ classic, but make the story their own. Combining wit and irreverence with a bit of sauce, the show is a miniature Broadway bash that fits its intimate stage to perfection.
