Young Norfolk dancers are among those set to take flight in an innovative new dance performance looking at wartime life in the RAF.
Cinderella: A Museum Adventure will be performed among the planes at the Imperial War Museum Duxford, in Cambridgeshire, this Wednesday.
Dancing under the aircraft, the young performers from all-male dance company Legacy will portray the lives, excitement and drama of the young men sent to serve at the RAF airfield.
They will be joined by professional performers from Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures company which has co-created the piece. It is part of a collaborative project at the Imperial War Museum sites in Duxford, Manchester and London to coincide with the tour of Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella which is coming to Norwich Theatre Royal later this month.
During rehearsals at Norwich Theatre Royal’s Stage Two venue, Legacy member Joe Barbrook, 17, said: “We are doing a piece about two young boys who are interested in planes. It shows the story of them growing up, going to Duxford and then going into battle...To think that people of our age would have been fighting is hard to imagine.”
Tim Nutt, 18, said the location really added to the performance.
“It is amazing to be able to perform in that space at the Imperial War Museum Duxford,” he said.
“It is fascinating having these planes above our heads. It is an emotional, intriguing and exciting story. There are so many different things going on so the audience can focus on lots of different things.”
Legacy - made up of dancers aged 10 to 21 from across East Anglia - was originally formed following a production of Lord of the Flies at Norwich Theatre Royal which saw young male performers star alongside members of Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures company. This latest collaboration has also involved members of Norwich Theatre Royal’s Introduction To Script-Writing course.
The performances of Cinderella: A Museum Adventure on Wednesday are part of a day of events at the Imperial War Museum Duxford hich also includes talks and dance workshops. For more information, visit www.iwm.org.uk/events/cinderella-a-museum-adventure
