Archant

Cyclists of all abilities braved some sweltering evening temperatures to take on the lung-busting summit of the Gas Hill Gasp.

Professional riders might find it difficult, but 28-year-old Charlie Haines described his ride as “terrible”.

The stag had only had half an hour warning he was going to compete - and on a yellow Ofo bike.

His friends said they dreamed up the idea to “make him suffer a little bit”.

Mr Haines, who used to work at Street Life Cycles, was in a heat with three others and came last.

But he made it to the finish line.

“It was awful,” he said afterwards. “I know something like this was coming but I didn’t know I was going up Gas Hill. It was terrible, noisy and rattly.”

Hundreds of people lined the side of the road for the heats as riders battled the steepest hill in Norwich, which helped kick off a weekend of events to mark the Lord Mayor’s Celebrations.
