The Silver Road Community Centre on Silver Road, Norwich, is putting on the evening meal for anyone on Friday, July 27 from 6-8pm.

Julie Brociek-Coulton, city and county councillor for Norwich's Sewell ward and volunteer manager of the centre, said: 'The residents that come here wanted to have a day where people could get together and Norfolk Day was coming up. It will bring people together. The centre is a community hub.

'I think a lot of traditions in Norfolk have gone. We want to say that we are from Norfolk and we are having a celebration about it.'

The meal will be cooked by volunteers, who help run the centre.

It will be a traditional turkey dinner, including vegetables grown on nearby allotments.

Beer from Woodforde's Brewery, one of the two main sponsors of Norfolk Day, will be served alongside the food.

Richardson's Hemsby Beach Holiday Park is the other main sponsor and Norfolk Wildlife Trust is Norfolk Day's charity partner.

The meal will finish off with rhubarb crumble and custard.

As well as the food, two storytellers will tell Norfolk tales.

Mrs Brociek-Coulton added that previous community meals at the Silver Road Community Centre had been a success.

Earlier events have featured an international flavour with Bollywood dancing.

The running of the Silver Road Community Centre, formerly the Silver Rooms, was taken over by volunteers four years ago.

The community-minded committee took over the 25-year lease for the Norfolk County Council-owned building with a £1 yearly rent.

Silver Road Community Centre was the first building in Norfolk to receive an asset of community value, according to Mrs Brociek-Coulton.

A variety of groups for all ages use the building, which needs £150,000 worth of repairs.

Tickets for the Norfolk Day meal cost £3 per person.
